What is Ecological & Landscape Classification (ELC)?
Ecosystems, the biotic community and its abiotic environment, develop as a result of the interaction between soils, terrain, landscape position and vegetation. The scale (or size) of ecosystems relates to the ecological processes that you want to describe.
Ecosystem classification and mapping refers to an integrated approach to land survey in which areas or units of land are classified and mapped according to their ecological similarity.
In Yukon, we describe and map ecosystems at scales that help us manage Yukon resources and activities.
Application in management
The aims of ecosystem classification and mapping are to provide primary information on the biological and physical characteristics of various landscape components in order to facilitate a range of interpretations and assist in sustainable management.
These landscape descriptions can be used for a range of applications including land use planning, environmental assessment, forest management, best management practices, habitat management, climate change risk assessment and adaptation.
A formalized ELC program in Yukon is a necessary component for the success of these initiatives.
