Management
The Canadian Heritage Rivers System was established in 1984 by the federal, provincial and territorial governments to conserve and protect the best examples of Canada's river heritage, to give them national recognition, and to encourage the public to enjoy and appreciate them.
Each Canadian Heritage River has a management plan developed by all those with lands along the river corridor. The group may include federal, territorial, First Nation, and municipal governments and private landowners.
All parties are responsible for managing their portions of the river in accordance with the management plan. Conditions or restrictions may be attached to land use permits to help meet the management plan's objectives.
