Managing Hazardous Waste
About Special Wastes
If you work with special waste (commonly known as hazardous waste) in any way, you should be aware of your legal obligations under the Yukon Special Waste Regulations. The regulations were developed to protect the environment and the health of our families by ensuring the safe handling and disposal of special wastes.
Common examples of special wastes include waste oil, batteries, antifreeze, and solvents. Any waste dangerous goods are special wastes.
The Special Waste Regulations, together with federal and territorial laws for transporting dangerous goods, complete a management system for dangerous goods handled in the Yukon from the point of manufacture to the point of final disposal.
Special Waste Permits
Under the regulations, anyone who generates, stores, handles, mixes, transports, disposes or releases special wastes is required to get a permit. Special waste permits are designed to ensure that special waste is stored and handled properly, and to track its movement to approved disposal facilities.
Permits are not required for handling your own household hazardous waste, but all special waste must be disposed of properly. Unauthorized releases of special waste to the environment are prohibited.
Special Waste Pick Up Service for Yukon Businesses
