Porcupine Caribou Herd

Porcupine Caribou / Environment Yukon Photo
The Yukon government is now in the process of giving practical effect to its obligations in the Harvest Management Plan for the Porcupine Caribou Herd in Canada, as set out in the Implementation Plan.
The herd is in the 'green zone' of 115,000+ animals at this time – the census conducted in summer 2010 estimated 169,000 animals present. Up until April of this year, when the final census results were released, the herd's estimated size was between 90,000 and 100,000 animals, down from 178,000 caribou in 1989.
The Implementation Plan was developed by senior officials from the Gwich'in Tribal Council, Inuvialuit Game Council, Vuntut Gwitchin government, Tr'ondëk Hwëchin government, First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun, Government of the Northwest Territories, Government of Yukon and Government of Canada. Each of these parties will be putting in place the necessary measures to ensure implementation of the Harvest Management Plan.
