Before you head out on a hunt, remember…
Respect Wildlife.
Take only what you need.
Use all that you take.
Take HEED – Learn Your Hunting Skills the Right Way
Everyone born after April 1, 1987 must successfully complete a hunter training course prior to obtaining their hunting license. People born before that date are not subject to the same requirement, but all new hunters are encouraged to participate in the course.
Before anyone can acquire or possess firearms and ammunition, they are required to successfully complete the Canadian Firearm Safety Course (CFSC), and obtain a Possession and Acquisition Licence (a “PAL” – similar to what used to be the Firearms Acquisition Certificate or FAC). Participants must attend the Hunter Education and Ethics Development (HEED) course before they can attend the CFSC offered by the Hunter Education program. The CFSC is also offered by private contractors in Whitehorse and some communities. Learn more about obtaining your PAL from the Canadian Firearms Program.
The Hunter Education and Ethics Development Course is held throughout the year in many Yukon communities, depending on demand and enrollment. It takes a minimum of 20 hours to complete when taken in conjunction with the CFSC. There is no fee for the course. Topics include outdoor ethics, field techniques, firearm safety, wildlife identification, wildlife management, hunting regulations, outdoor equipment and wilderness survival.
Course offerings have been planned for 2012, and are listed below. Please note that courses are offered based on demand, and will only be delivered if a minimum number of applicants are registered. The dates below are for planning purposes only.
Be aware: The last course offered before the summer season is in early May. If you need HEED certification to obtain a hunting license before the permit draw deadline (the 3rd Friday in June – this year June 15th) or before many hunting seasons open on August 1st, you should enroll in a course before the summer season. Also take note that courses offered during the fall tend to fill up quickly, while demand in the winter months is typically low.
Sign up for a course in the slower months to have a better chance of getting a spot.
Call 667-8005 or your local Conservation Officer to register for the courses listed below. Your name will be added to a waiting list and you will be contacted for a space in the next available course.
