Fishery Closures

Though you can fish in most waters in Yukon almost all times of year, there are certain places where fishing is prohibited. Knowing and abiding by these regulations is your responsibility. See the Yukon Fishing Regulations Summary for additional information on Fishery Closures.

Short Notice Closures (salmon-related)

Short notice closures are sometimes required to protect lower-than-expected salmon runs. The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) manages salmon and the salmon fisheries. DFO advertises these closures locally.

Anglers should check the most recent information on closures by contacting DFO at (867) 393-6722 or by checking the Fishery Notice website. Anglers can also sign up to receive closure notices by email.

Some other fish farming lakes are not listed, but may also be closed. These will have official public closure notices posted at the lake. There are no other soecial restrictions on the use of these public waters.

Fish farming lakes were fishless prior to being stocked. After going through a rigorous approval process, private individuals have stocked fish at their own expense. If you are unsure whether or not a pothole lake has been privately stocked, contact the Department of Environment at 867-667-5721.

Lakes stocked by Yukon Environment for public use are open to angling year round. Please the stocked lakes page for more information.
