About the Stocked Lakes Program

Over the past 30 years, Environment Yukon has released hundreds of thousands of fish into pothole lakes for the enjoyment of Yukon anglers.
These lakes provide anglers with the opportunity to fish for species not normally available, such as rainbow trout, Arctic char and kokanee. They also help take the pressure off slow-growing native fish such as lake trout.
Results of the 2011 Stocked Lakes Survey
In August 2011, Environment Yukon carried out an online survey on the Stocked Lakes Program, to determine how people used stocked lakes.

Some of the things we learned were:
- Rainbow trout were the most popular fish in stocked lakes, followed by Arctic char, then kokanee
- The number of trips to each lake varied enormously, from 128 trips reported for the Hidden Lakes, to four trips reported for Hour Lake
- Many respondents wanted to catch more fish and larger fish
- Some respondents wanted better signage and access to lakes
- Many respondents wanted more information on stocking numbers and fishing methods in stocked lakes
We will incorporate these findings into our Stocked Lakes Program Plan and use them to continue to provide quality angling opportunities at Yukon’s stocked lakes.

Fishing license requirements
You need a valid Yukon fishing licence to fish in a stocked lake. The catch and possession limits are more liberal for some species of stocked fish so be sure to check the Fishing Regulations Summary.
