Its name in French means "the unknown fish". It is also called Coney or sheefish.
Physical Characteristics
- Inconnu are light silver in colour, with a darker green, blue or brown back. The dorsal and tail fins have dusky margins, the other fins are pale.
- The lower jaw is longer than the upper, unlike other members of the whitefish family.
Habitat and Feeding
- In the Yukon, inconnu generally weigh 2 to 5 kg (4 to 11 lbs).
- Although they will take the hook and are excellent fighting fish, most are caught by gillnets.
- They are late summer or fall spawners.
- Inconnu are found in large lakes and rivers in the Yukon, Pelly, Stewart and Porcupine River systems.
