Yukon's Conservation Areas

National Parks of Canada


National parks protect environments representative of Canada's natural heritage for the benefit of present and future generations. National parks are managed by Parks Canada. There are three Canadian National Parks in Yukon:

Territorial Parks

Yukon's territorial parks are managed by the Yukon Parks branch of Environment Yukon, under the Parks and Lands Certainty Act. They include eight large parks, 42 campgrounds and 12 recreation sites. Depending on the goals of its protection and use, each territorial park is designated as Ecological Reserve, Wilderness Preserve, Natural Environment Park or Recreation Park.

Yukon Parks' system of campgrounds and recreation sites are designated as Recreation Parks.

Canadian Heritage Rivers


The Canadian Heritage Rivers System conserves the best examples of Canada's river heritage, to give them national recognition, and to encourage the public to enjoy and appreciate them.


Each Canadian Heritage River has a management plan developed by all those with lands along the river corridor. The group may include federal, territorial, First Nation, and municipal governments and private landowners.


There are four Canadian Heritage Rivers in Yukon. Parks Canada is the lead managing agency for the Alsek River, whereas Yukon Parks is the lead for the other three.

National Wildlife Areas


National Wildlife Areas are created and managed for the purposes of wildlife conservation, research, and interpretation. National Wildlife Areas are managed by Environment Canada.


There is one National Wildlife Area in Yukon:

Habitat Protection Areas and Special Management Areas

Created and managed under the Yukon Wildlife Act, Habitat Protection Areas and Special Management Areas are managed by the Fish & Wildlife Branch of Environment Yukon.

Wildlife Sanctuaries


Wildlife Sanctuaries provide refuge for wildlife from licensed hunters. Wildlife Sanctuaries are designated under the Yukon Wildlife Act.


There is one Wildlife Sanctuary in Yukon. The Kluane Wildlife Sanctuary is approximately 22,000 square kilometres and includes three areas:
