Agay Mene
Agay Mene Territorial Park is identified under Chapter 10 of the Carcross Tagish First Nation Final Agreement.
Park Objectives
The objectives of Agay Mene Territiorial Park, as identified in the Final Agreement, include:
- To protect for the benefit of all Yukon people the full diversity of fish and wildlife populations and their habitats in the area from activities which would reduce the park's capability to support fish and wildlife;
- To recognize and protect the traditional use of the area by Carcross/Tagish and Teslin Tlingit people in the development and management of the park;
- To recognize the past and current use of the area by Carcross/Tagish people, the Teslin Tlingit people and other Yukon residents in the development and management of the park;
- To encourage public awareness of and appreciation for the natural resources of the area;
- To provide quality sport fishing opportunities in the park; and
- To recognize and provide for recreational opportunities in the park for all Yukon people.
Park Status
Agay Mene Territorial Park is classified as a Natural Environment Park. It has not been formally established under the Yukon Parks and Land Certainty Act.
An Agay Mene Territorial Park Steering Committee has been set up, and includes representatives from Yukon Government, Carcross/Tagish First Nation and the Teslin Tlingit Council.
The Steering Committee will consider the objectives of the park as set out in the Carcross/Tagish Final Agreement when developing a management plan for the park.
The Steering Committee will be seeking public input at key stages of the planning process. Visit the Agay Mene Steering Committee website for information regarding the process, background and opportunities for input.
The plan will be jointly reviewed by Yukon Government and each of the affected First Nations before final approval by Yukon Government’s Minister of Environment.
