Hazardous Waste
About Hazardous or Special Wastes
If you work with special waste (commonly known as hazardous waste), be aware of your legal obligations under the Yukon Special Waste Regulations. The regulations protect the environment and our health by ensuring the safe handling and disposal of special waste. Any waste dangerous goods are special wastes.
Examples of special wastes include:
- Used oil
- Used fuel
- Used batteries
- Used Antifreeze
- Waste pesticides
- Used solvents
- Lab chemicals
Special Waste Permits
Anyone generates, stores, handles, mixes, transports, disposes or releases special wastes is requires a permit. Special waste permits ensure proper storage, handling and tracking of movement to approved disposal facilities.
Permits are not required for handling household hazardous waste, but such waste must be disposed of properly. It is illegal to release hazardous or special waste into the environment.
